Eating disorders are commonly found in teenagers. Teens are vulnerable to the media’s false portrayal of a perfect person. Slim body and flawless skin are major issues. Although eating disorders are mostly linked to teen girls, teen boys also experiences it. How can parental involvement curbs it all?
Be a Good Example
Our children closely observe our diet, lifestyle, and attitude even though not very obvious. Take note if we have given them good examples and if not then it is time to change. Parents can start exercising, eat healthier, and live a more active life. Remember not to be overly critical about our appearances such as our weight or hair. Sometimes it does comes out naturally and we forget that our children are on the side noticing. Someday they will also be overlv critical about him/herself. focusing only on their weaknesses instead of their strengths.
Be Positive
Do not criticize our child’s body. If he/she has a weight issue, I bet he/she already realizes it. Our comments will only corner them and worsen the existing problem. Instead, praise them. When we are being positive, we are cuilding a positive body image too. Advise healthy diet, good personal hygiene, correct posture, adequate sleep, and stress relief. Exercising together may be the solution. If our teen needs further help, parents can help by consulting school counselor or a doctor to establish feasible diet and exercise plans.
Teach Them about the Media
Teach our children to be more skeptical of what they see on the magazines, televisions, and the internet. Make sure they understand that there are other factors involved such as photo touch ups. stylist, personal trainer, plastic surgery, etc as parts of the beauty industry and celebrity lifestyle.
Focus on Non Physical Strengths
Support their talents and skills that have nothing to do with their physical appearance such as in music, sports, arts, or social work. Show interest in their favorite activities. Praise their good qualities like how they pay attention at school, care for their siblings, or simply being funny.
Make Healthy Living a Family Affair
The whole family will live healthier if we do not provide fast food items at home. Cook healthy nutritious meals instead of buying take outs. Change should not always be dramatic and therefore can begin gradually. Do things together to smoothen the change such as having healthy home cooked dinner together and exercising together.
